Climate Change causes droughts, floods, heat waves, intense storms, changes in rainfall etc. Of course, these changes affect the Olympic Games too! Imagine running a marathon in a heat wave! Summer and Winter Olympics are affected. Let’s see how:

Winter sports : Warmer temperatures produce less snow for skiing etc. The games sometimes need to be postponed. Fewer places are able to host the Winter Olympic Games. Reports say that more than half of traditional Winter Olympic hosts will not be able to host the Games by 2050. The climate in many traditional winter sports locations isn’t what it used to be.

Summer sports: Extreme heat makes training difficult. Athletes need to travel farther to find suitable weather conditions to train. Athletes may suffer from heatstroke during the Marathon. Competing or just watching outdoor sports is becoming more difficult because of the heat.

Pitches, fields and arenas become unsuitable for the Olympic Games. There are heavier downpours of rain in certain areas. The pitches become soggy and sometimes flooded making them unsuitable for the games. This affects all the sports played there. Cricket is the most affected sport of all so far because it is affected by both extreme heat and flooding.

Climate change is making the weather more unpredictable than ever before. Already there are cancellations of sports events because of the changes in temperature and weather conditions. In the near future, this may lead to changes in the schedule of the Olympic Games. For example, the summer Olympics may need to be scheduled for autumn or spring because of the extreme heat.

Answer the questions:

Global warming is causing less snowfall. Can you think of some sports which are affected by this: ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Name some sports which are affected by the heavier downpours of rain which cause flooding: …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Which Olympic sports do you think will be affected by the extreme heat in the future? ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Now, remember the grammar rules for comparisons of adjectives and do this exercise.

This e Twinning project “Countdown to the Tokyo Olympics 2020 or 2021″ started the year 2019-2020. It was awarded with National Quality Labels as well as European Quality Labels. Unfortunately, because of covid-19 the Olympic Games were postponed that year. We decided to continue the project the following year 2020-2021 incorporating the very serious issue of Climate Change.

The students began the project with researching and learning about the Ancient Olympic Games and the Modern Olympic Games. They were then put into teams and a team mascot was chosen. The mascots each team chose is an endangered species. The Red Panda, the Green Frog and the Tiger were chosen. Our team’s mascot is the Red Panda and the chosen representative design is the above image created by a student from our partner school from Spain.

The students researched these species and discovered how Global warming is threatening their existence. In this magazine we will portray our work on the subject of Climate Change.

The world has the perfect temperature to keep all living things alive. This temperature depends on a balance. The sun’s heat goes to Earth to make it warm and then this heat bounces back to space to make the Earth cool. When this balance is lost, the climate changes.

The Earth’s climate has changed many times before. This is called “natural climate change” and is caused by volcanic eruptions, changes in the sun’s energy and changes in the Earth’s orbit.

Greenhouse gases (Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) also make the Earth warmer. They are like a blanket covering our planet. This started in the 1700s.

-We cut down a lot of trees.

- We build more buildings and roads (the cities are growing larger and larger) and more of the natural environment is becoming farmland. The wild animals are losing their habitat, their home. They are becoming endangered species.

- We burn coal to create electricity.

- We burn oil to make our cars and planes move.

- We use chemicals to make things.

- We burn gas to cook our food.

- We waste food and we dump our rubbish in landfills.

All these actions emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The consequences are catastrophic!

Ice sheets and glaciers are melting, the sea levels are rising, storms are getting stronger, some places are getting drier, the sea is getting warmer and many species of animals are in danger of extinction. All living things are in trouble.
