On May 29, Grades E and F from the 2nd Primary School of Karditsa visited the “Filoneikos” farm.

Students had to complete pre-planned activities. After being divided into 5 groups of 5 people, they had to vote for their group leader. This leader had to be a 6th grader. They then made a choice of the activity they wanted to do.

They played the card game. The children had to match 10 specific animals with their country of origin on a large world map that we had brought with us from our school. But beforehand, at school, they had planned for Edison to “visit” each country.

In the study of the environment subject: “Animals”, the students drew animals or built them with Lego blocks. We discussed about the care that animals need and the respect we should . We also referred to the abandonment and abuse that some animals receive, to their exploitation by humans, to the role of human activity that leads to their extinction.

They then placed their animals on Edison and programmed him to follow their commands.

In the Canva project the students of our school created group posters about animal abuse.

The cause for this rendezvous was a virtual tour of the museum of ancient Greek technology Kotsana and a first contact with the exhibits housed there. Although it cannot replace, it can substitute all this enormous wealth one can see here. Everything is amazing and made us marvel the knowledges of our ancestors! One of them, although it was not the most complex, attracted our interest for the simplicity and intelligence that hides its conception, but also for the amazing use of water that is the subject of our project. This was Plato’s Alarm Clock!

The students Zahari Stefania, Alexakos Konstantinos, Kotsiaridis Stelina and Kourdi Melina of 6thClass undertook and created a comprehensive presentation of the specific exhibit so that we could all see and understand how it works.

It is a hydraulic alarm clock, which according to Athenaios was invented by Plato. The upper ceramic pot fed through a faucet (with an adjustable flow for each case) the next pot. When this filled up at the programmed time (eg after 7 hours), it was rapidly emptied through an axial siphon into the next pot and the contained air was forced out under pressure, whistling through a syringe at its top. Because the tube ended in water, its pulsating sound length created a chirping sound with different frequency tones. After its operation, the water in the pot was slowly drained through a small hole in its bottom to the lower storage pot, to be reused.

And thus the idea was born that Edison could be used in the same way that faucets and siphons were used by Plato!

Of course, Edison doesn’t have a siphon or a syringe, but he does have a beeper and in fact he can play any note and therefore “play” a composition that we will assign to him and which will play the role of an alarm clock. It also doesn’t have faucets to fill them, but our robot has sensors and a set of keys through which it can accept data, which in our case will be the time we want to sleep.

So we worked in the IT lab, got to know Edison’s capabilities through the command palettes in the Edscratch programming environment, and arrived at the following result.

Talos was a mythical bronze giant, the first robot in history, which protected Minoan Crete from would-be invaders. He could travel round the whole of Crete three times a day.

Talos was not born but made, either by Zeus himself or, according to other versions of the myth, by Hephaestus, god of fire and iron.

Talos resembled an enormous man whose body was made of bronze. He had a single vein of molten metal which gave him life, running from his neck to his ankles. A bronze peg in his ankle stopped the life-giving ichor from pouring out.

Talos’s task was to defend Crete from invaders, circling the island three times daily. You see, no traces of walls protecting cities have been found in Crete. Talos did not allow any enemy ships to approach, hurling massive rocks to sink the wooden ships of those who dared to threaten Crete.

The students, divided into groups, drew the island of Crete and made a black line around it. Then, in EdBlocks they programmed Edison to circle their drawings on the black line three times.
The children decided that Edison will not be hostile to the ships, like Talos, who burned them and threw stones at them. On the contrary, Edison will be friendly and when the robot meets a boat it will flash its lights and play Cretan music.

This year the school acquired the Edison robot.

Edison (https://meetedison.com/) is a lego-like robot in toy car form. It is designed, not only as an autonomous robot, but also as a robotics system that is easily expandable using LEGO® bricks.

It is a product of the Australian company Microbric, which deals with the development of robotic systems. Brenton O’Brien, creator of Edison and founder of Microbric, says he developed Edison as an affordable robotics teaching tool for schools. It is durable and easy to use.

It has infrared sensors that allow it to avoid obstacles and follow a black line, perceive sounds and light intensity. Its programming is done in any operating system through the graphical environment of the programs: EdWare, Edblocks, Edscratch and EdPython. It is also programmed using Barcodes.

The students at our school are excited about Edison, learning to program it and playing with it.
