It is said that the carnival of Venice started as a religious victory in 1162. In memory of this victory people started dancing and gathering in Saint Mark’s Square in Venice. However, according to the rule of the king of Australia, the festival was completely outlawed in 1797 and the use of masks was strictly prohibited. The carnival started again in 19797. The Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice and they tried to use the traditional carnival as the focus of their efforts. Today about 3.000.000 visitors come to Venice every year for carnival. One of the most important events is the competition La maschera più bella (for the most beautifyl mask placed on the most beautiful weekend of the carnival and judgled by an international group of fashion designers.

How are they made?

Venetian masks are made of leather, papier maché, porcelain or with an original

technique of glass. Originally they were rather simple in design and decoration,

while today they are hand painted and decorated with natural feathers, precious

metals and stones. The designs and colors exceed every imagination and meet every desire.

They are mostly made of gypsum when mass produced.But handmade masks are

truly works of art. They make the plaster mold from which a pulp of paper, rags and

a type of glue takes shape.

When this form is dry, it is covered with a light layer of plaster and then with a base

color for the remaining colors and materials of the mask. The mask is left for hours

to dry after each stage. A laborious and time-consuming process, but this is the only

way to preserve the centuries-old tradition.

Handmade masks are always larger, more fragile and with elaborate decorations

and more expensive materials.

Of course, their prices start at around 100 euros and go up to a few hundred, depending on the size.

before Lent. It is considered the biggest carnival in the world,

with two million people a day on the streets.

The first Carnival festival in Rio took place in 1723.Its starts on

Friday 17 February and ends on Saturday 25 February.

The days of Carnival in «beautiful Brazil» are distinguished by

their inimitable fun, spontaneous liveliness and contagious

positive energy which, combined with the welcoming

 temperament of its people, offer an unforgettable extravaganza –

a challenge to all the senses.

The eyes of the ordinary viewer are dazzled by the

phantasmagoria of colors and the almost

 sculptural perfection of the bodies. Brazilians forget for a while

the poverty, the worries and the miserable everyday life and go

wild dancing the samba.

The only anxiety they allow themselves during this period has to

do with their appearance in the parade and the prize they are all

vying for. For four days and nights people pour out dancing in the

streets. Reference point, the famous Sambodromium, a huge

stadium created by Oscar Niemeyer, especially for the Carnival

events.

However, this year’s Rio carnival has taken on a highly political

dimension after the election of Jáich Bolsonaro, and the

mysterious murder of activist Mariele Franco, which

 has not yet been solved. Franco was one of the most well-known

city councilors in the country who had been outspoken about her

homosexuality.The Mangueira samba sch ool prepared a tribute

to the well-known activist and won the prize in the annual

competition. The theme of the parade was respect for diversity

and the rights of blacks, gays and minorities.

About a century ago Rijeka lived carnival more intensively than any other town in this part of the country. Carnival parades were organized, which were impressive and carnival balls with the presence of Austrians and Hungarian aristocrats, Russian princes and of German barons, courtesans and countesses from all over the Europe.

The revival of the Rijeka carnival began in 1982. It has become the biggest carnival in Croatia.
