Fencing is  a group of three techniques. These are: flere, epee and sabre. The contestants win when they touch the opponent with the sword. The contemporary sport appeared in the late 19th century.

Most athletes choose to practise only one of the three techniques.

Kostis, D class

Sailing is one of the oldest Olympic sports, as it is part of the Olympics since 1900 when it started in France.

In 2008 there were 29 different categories, where windsurfing is also included.

There are men’s, women’s and all mixed teams in sailing.

Panayiotis, D class

Artistic gymnastics is the sport of  gymnastics.

The athletes can complete in a variety of sports, with or without being timed and they get their points by a commitee who base their point on the level of difficulty of the program.

For male gymnasts, the Olympic order is:

1) Floor exercise (ασκήσεις εδάφους: ρόδα, κατακόρυφο, τούμπες στον αέρα)

2) Pommel horse (δοκός ισορροπίας)

3) Still rings (κρίκοι)

4) Vault (άλμα)

5) Parallel bars (παράλληλοι ζυγοί)

6) Horizontal bar (μονόζυγο)

For female gymnasts, the Olympic order is:

1) Vault

2) Uneven bars

3) Balance beam

4) Floor exercise

Vasiliki, D class

In the 1950s biathlon* became known in Russian and Swedish tracks

and quickly became popular** as well.

The first Biathlon World Championship was held in 1958 in Austria, and in 1960 the sport was finally included in the Olympic games (Wikipedia, Biathlon, 02/02/24)

It combines two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle*** shooting.

Free skiing is the most preferred technique as it is the fastest way to win.

When the athlete reaches a target, s/he has to shoot with her/his rifle.

One wins when s/he wins the skiing race and also shoots and gets all five targets.

Κonstantinos, D class

The birthplace of curling is Scotland where it has been played for more than five centuries.

Curling is a team sport, similar to bowls and shuffleboard. Its is played by two teams, each one consisting of four players. In this sport, players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles.

In 2018 winter Olympic Games curling took place for the 7th  time, but it was the first time that there were mixed doubles, meaning teams consisted of both men and women.

Curling is also a sport in the Paralympic Games, called «wheelchair curling».

Jason and Bill, D class

Cycling is an olympic game that men and women with mobility difficulties and partially-sighted or blind can participate. For this reason, two wheels or three wheels, hand-operated or tandem bicycles are used according to the category of disability.

There are cycling events in both cycle paths (speed races) and in public road (endurance race and individual time-keeping races).

Cycling started in Greece at the end of the 19th century. In the first contemporary Olympic games which were held in 1896, Greece won the gold medal in public-road cycling race with our athlete Aristidis Konstantinidis.

First, find information about an Olympic sport.

Then find some classmates and work in groups.

• Make small posters with pictures of  Olympic sports. You can use photos from magazines or draw your own pictures. Write the name of the sport under its picture.
• Role play the Olympic sport. Create your own racket, baseball, or racket. Explain the rules and play outside in the schoolyard.
• You can find information in books or on the website of the Olympic Games, www.olympic.

• Look in your History book and see if there are Olympic sports in Ancient Greece that are Olympic sports of today. Find information on how Ancient Greeks did these sports and talk about the differences between then and now.
