«Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man»

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known to the world as Mahatmas Gandhi, was born on October 2 1869, at Porbandar, today known as the Indian state of Gujarat. His father was the chief minister of Porbandar. His deeply religious mother was a devoted practioner of Vaishnavism. Mahatma, at the age of 19, left home to study law in London at the Inner Temple, one of the city’s four law colleges. Upon returning to India in mid-1891, he set up a law practise in Bombay, but met with little success. He soon accepted a position with an Indian firm that sent him to its office in South Africa. Along with his wife, Kasturbai, and their children, Gandhi remained in South Africa for nearly 20 years.

Gandhi is known world wide because he was an Indian activist who was the leader of the Indian Independecne Movement against the British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to its independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Acts like the famous Salt March in 1930 and multiple hunger stikes met ultimately helped him achieve his goal, the Independence of India. Unfortunately Mahatma was assassinated on 30 January 1948 at the age of 78. Nathuram Godse shot hime at Delhi.

Mahatmas Gandhi was a hero and he will never be forgotten.
