The Earthquake in Alkyonides Islands
by Katsara Andrianna and Kouli Panagiota B3
On the night of 24th February 1981, a few minutes before 11 pm, one of the most powerful earthquakes of the last decades, took place, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, in the area of the Alkyonides Islands, in the Corinthian Gulf. It caused much damage to the buildings and a lot of panic to the people, who spent the night in cars and parks. The panic became more intense also to the outage of the electricity power which followed the vibration.
The largest damages happened in Viotia and Korinthia, and many buildings collapsed. A very big aftershock of 6.4 on the Richter scale completes destroying what was left, whilst vibrations continue for several weeks, with the biggest of them, the one of 6.3 on the Richter scale on the 4th of March.
20 people lost their lives and more than 500 were injured. More than 22.500 houses were completely destroyed and almost 60.000 suffered major or minor damages.
