Easter in Corfu is celebrated with vibrant and unique traditions that highlight the island’s rich cultural heritage. One of the most well-known customs is the throwing of clay pots, known as botides, from balconies on Holy Saturday. This act symbolizes the welcoming of spring and the renewal of life and creates a festive atmosphere as the pots shatter on the streets below.
On the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter service is a grand and deeply moving event. Crowds gather in churches to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, as church bells ring joyfully and fireworks light up the night sky. Families then gather for a festive meal, with traditional roast lamb, red-dyed eggs and the sweet, braided bread known as tsoureki.
Easter in Corfu is a time of joy, community, and deep-rooted traditions that bring people together in a uniquely festive and heartfelt celebration of the Resurrection.
