William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. He was born in April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small town in England. His exact birth date is unknown, but he was baptized on April 26, 1564.

Shakespeare’s father, John Shakespeare, was a successful glove maker and a local official, while his mother, Mary Arden, came from a well-respected family. William probably attended the local grammar school, where he learned Latin, literature, and drama, though there is no record of him attending university.

In 1582, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, and they had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sadly, Hamnet died at the age of 11.

By the early 1590s, Shakespeare had moved to London, where he worked as an actor and began writing plays. He became a member of a famous acting company called The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as The King’s Men. The company performed many of Shakespeare’s plays at the Globe Theatre, which became one of the most important theaters in London.

Shakespeare wrote about 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and several long poems. His plays are usually divided into tragedies (such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet), comedies (like A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night), and histories (such as Henry V). His works explore timeless themes like love, power, jealousy, ambition, and betrayal.

Around 1613, Shakespeare retired to Stratford-upon-Avon, where he lived comfortably until his death on April 23, 1616, at the age of 52.

Today, William Shakespeare’s plays are performed and studied all over the world, and his influence on the English language and literature remains stronger than ever.
