World Theatre Day – March 27th

Every year on March 27th, people around the world come together to celebrate World Theatre Day. This tradition began in 1961, thanks to the International Theatre Institute (ITI), to remind us how important theatre is in our lives. Theatre is not just entertainment — it is a way to share stories, explore ideas, and bring people from different countries and cultures closer together.
Theatre has existed for thousands of years, from the ancient Greek tragedies and comedies to today’s modern plays and musicals. On World Theatre Day, schools, theatres, and communities hold special performances, workshops, and talks to honor this beautiful art. It is a day to remember that theatre gives us the chance to see the world from new perspectives and to feel connected through live storytelling.
This year, in 2025, the official World Theatre Day message comes from Ahmed El Attar, a well-known playwright and director from Egypt. In his message, he speaks about the power of theatre to make people think, to open discussions, and to unite us in challenging times. He calls the theatre a safe space where many voices can be heard, and where creativity and new ideas come alive.
The theme for 2025 is «Theatre as a Mirror of Society.» Around the world, performances are focusing on important social issues such as justice, equality, and peace. At the same time, they celebrate the rich traditions and diversity of different cultures. This year’s celebration is a strong reminder that, even though technology and digital media are everywhere, live theatre still has a special power. It invites us to listen, imagine, and understand each other better.
World Theatre Day 2025 encourages everyone — artists, students, and audiences — to keep the spirit of theatre alive and to use it as a tool for learning, sharing, and building a more united world.
