Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year.
Adults and children alike enjoy the Christmas festivities by decorating the tree and singing Christmas carols together.
In Greece, Christmas is an important and special holiday.
  •  The Christmas boat
At Christmas the decoration of the tree is very common, but this custom is not Greek but came to Greece in the time of Otto.
From ancient times the Greeks decorated a ship.
This custom arose due to the fact that the Greeks were primarily a naval people and the Christmas boat was common in the coastal areas.
When the children sang carols, they used to take a small boat with them to fill the housewives with chocolate chip cookies and melomakarona.
Gradually, the Christmas tree became widely known and the Christmas boat was forgotten.
  •  The breaking of the pomegranate
On New Year's Eve it is customary to break a pomegranate for good luck in their home.
This custom symbolizes euphoria and fertility and is widespread in all Greek homes.
  •  Christmas bread
On Christmas Eve, housewives make the traditional Christmas bread.
The difference with regular bread is the shape and the designs on it.
Apart from the cross made of dough that separates the bread in half, the housewives decorated it with various designs and dedicated it to the birth of Christ.
  • The king pie
According to tradition, the royal pie was created by the Great King of Caesarea, who found a trick to distribute money to the poor.
He hid the coins in pies and offered them to them.This explains the coin we put in the king pie to be won by someone lucky on New Year's Eve.
  •  Carols
On the eve of Christmas, New Year and Lights the children go home and sing the carols.
