  On the night of 24^th February 1981, a few minutes before 11 pm, one of the most powerful earthquakes of the last decades, took place, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, in the area of the Alkyonides Islands, in the Corinthian Gulf. It caused much damage to the buildings and a lot of panic to the people, who spent the night in cars and parks. The panic became more intense also to the outage of the electricity power which followed the vibration.

The largest damages happened in Viotia and Korinthia, and many buildings collapsed. A very big aftershock of 6.4 on the Richter scale completes destroying what was left, whilst vibrations continue for several weeks, with the biggest of them, the one of 6.3 on the Richter scale on the 4^th of March.

20 people lost their lives and more than 500 were injured. More than 22.500 houses were completely destroyed and almost 60.000 suffered major or minor damages.

GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT Greece is a beautiful nation in the Southern part of the Balkan Peninsula, and on the east part of the Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded to the east by the Aegean Sea, to the south by the Cretan and the Libyan seas, and to the west by the Ionian Sea which separates Greece from Italy.

Greece is a mostly mountainous country with a very long coastline, filled with peninsulas and islands. Greece has 6000 islands, out of which only 227 are inhabited. Greece has a population of around 10 million people, with close to 1 million immigrants living among them. The climate can range from semi-desert to cold. Greece’s natural hazards include severe earthquakes, floods, droughts and wildfires.

MONUMENTS AND ARTS     Historical monuments in Greece and the Greek islands date from all time periods, from the Mycenaean and the Classical times till the Medieval and Modern Era. The Acropolis of Athens is the most famous historical monument in Greece. It was constructed in the mid-5th century BC, also known as the Golden Century of Athens. Although the most famous building on the Acropolis is the Parthenon, there are many other buildings, like the Propylaea, the Election, and the Temple of Athena Nike.

Greece, unlike other countries, isn’t very well known for the art of drawing, but for the art of architecture. Millions of Tourists come to visit ancient yet astonishing buildings like the Parthenon in Athens, the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, etc. But this doesn’t mean that Greece doesn’t have artists! The most famous Greek painter is, of course, El Greco, who was born in Crete.

EDUCATION: Greece offers free education like every other nation in the European Union. Greek education starts at 4, with 2 years of nursery school, 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior high school, and it ends with 3 years of high school, with the students being 18 years old. Later, they can continue their studies at the Greek Universities.

SPORTS:  The most famous sport in Greece is by far football. Greek people have always, since ancient times to be specific, showed a strong attraction towards physical activity. Greece has 35 gold Olympic medals in karate, won the 2004 European Football Cup, and has produced a lot of great athletes, like Mike Zambidis, one of the greatest Kickboxers of all time.

FOOD: Greek cuisine: In common with many other cuisines of the Mediterranean, it is founded on wheat, olive oil, grains, fish, and meat including pork, poultry, veal, and beef. Other important ingredients include pasta. Famous is also the Greek Souvlaki.

LEISURE TIME:  Sports are a very famous activity in Greece, loved by many, making it the, without a doubt, most famous leisure time activity in Greece amongst teenagers. However, young people in Greece also consider in large numbers playing video games a leisure time activity. Older people usually meet up in Cafés with friends or visit each other’s houses to spend their time.

 NIGHTLIFE A night out usually starts with a dinner at one of the many taverns and restaurants and continues either with a soft drink in a lounge bar or in impressive nightclubs with crazy parties until sunrise. Bars in Greece stay open until late at night and each bar plays a different kind of music, from Greek and international pop to alternative rock, jazz, Latin, and much more.

Από το επετειακό σκετς στην αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων

Την επετειακή γιορτή του σχολείου μας για την 28η Οκτωβρίου 1940 πλαισίωσε  με επίκαιρα τραγούδια η χορωδία του σχολείου που απαρτίζεται από 42 μαθητές και μαθήτριες όλων των τάξεων του γυμνασίου. Η γιορτή ξεκίνησε με το απολυτίκιο της Παναγίας μας Αγίας Σκέπης που σκέπαζε και προστάτευε τους στρατιώτες μας στα βουνά της Πίνδου, στη συνέχεια απέδωσε το τραγούδι Κορόιδο Μουσολίνι κατά το κλείσιμο του θεατρικού που ανέβασαν οι μαθητές της β και γ τάξης. Ακολούθησε ένα μικρό ρεπερτόριο τεσσάρων τραγουδιών που απέδωσαν οι χορωδοί με μεγάλη επιτυχία. «Μέσα στην καρδιά μου κλείνω την Ελλάδα» σε μουσική και στίχους  Μίκη Θεοδωράκη, «Παιδιά της Ελλάδος παιδιά» σε στίχους Μίμη Τραϊφόρου και μουσική Μιχάλη Σουγιούλ, «Μελαχρινέ Ναπολιτάνο» και τέλος

Unfortunately, this year once again Greece is suffering from many uncontrollable wildfires in many locations across the country and also some islands. In this article, I am going to focus on Athens Greece.

In Agia Paraskevi, in a small village on Mount Parnitha we found an elderly lady standing in front of her burnt house. She was crying as she stood in front of everything she’d lost. A little further down the road we found Mr Nikos standing outside his house trying to keep everything wet to keep the fire away, but however hard his attempt there could be no success. He and his family were forced to leave and they lost everything.

The firefighters on the ground and in the air fought endlessly but the fires continued to rage. This destroys people’s livelihood and our countryside.

We need to act and make sure this doesn’t keep repeating, but how can we solve this never-ending problem? We would love to hear your comments and move forward. What really needs to be done, where should money be used…extra protection like planes/helicopters and firefighter vehicles or military for example?

ΙΔΡΥΜΑ ΕΥΓΕΝΙΔΟΥ

 Συνεντευξιαζόμενος: κ. Μάνος Κιτσώνας, διευθυντής του Πλανηταρίου

 Το πλανητάριο που στεγάζεται στο ίδρυμα Ευγενίδου ξεκίνησε να λειτουργεί το 1966 μέχρι το 1999. Το 2003 με τα εγκαίνια του νέου ψηφιακού πλανηταρίου σηματοδοτήθηκε η έναρξη ενός νέου τρόπου εκμάθησης. Συνδυάζοντας τη ψυχαγωγία με την εκπαίδευση έχει καταφέρει να προσελκύσει αρκετούς μαθητές/τριες.

Στις 4/10/2023 το 1ο Γυμνάσιο Σαλαμίνας επισκέφτηκε το πλανητάριο. Οι μαθήτριες της Β΄2 τάξης (Αμελί Νάννου, Αλεξάνθη Χατζή, Ηρώ Νίκα, Ελευθερία Μωραϊτη) είχαν την τιμή να πάρουν συνέντευξη από τον διευθυντή του πλανηταρίου: Μάνο Κιτσώνα. Η συνέντευξη διήρκησε 8 λεπτά.

Το κτηριακό κομμάτι ήταν αυτό που μας απασχόλησε στην πρώτη ερώτηση. Ερώτηση 1:Πόσοι όροφοι και αίθουσες υπάρχουν στο ίδρυμα;

Απάντηση: «Υπάρχουν υπόγεια, ισόγειο, 1ος όροφος και 2ος όροφος.Έχει πάρα πολλές αίθουσες και δραστηριότητες, μια μεγάλη αίθουσα είναι το πλανητάριο.Μια επίσης μεγάλη αίθουσα είναι το αμφιθέατρο που είναι τετρακοσίων θέσεων  και υπάρχουν και άλλες πολλές μικρότερες που τις χρησιμοποιούμε για διαφορετικές παρουσιάσεις, δραστηριότητες κλπ. Υπάρχει και ένα μικρό αμφιθέατρο στην αίθουσα τεχνολογίας κ επιστήμης όπου γίνονται επιδείξεις».

 Η δεύτερη ερώτηση της συνέντευξης είχε να κάνει με τα σχολεία που επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο το πλανητάριο.

 Ερώτηση 2: Πόσοι μαθητές/σχολεία σας επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο και σε ποιες ηλικιές σας επισκέπτονται;

 Απάντηση: «Περίπου 100.000 μαθητές από διάφορα σχολεία της Ελλάδας μας επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο. Τα περισσότερα παιδιά που μας επισκέπτονται είναι παιδιά της 5ης και της 6ης δημοτικού καθώς και του γυμνασίου,σπανιότερα μας επισκέπτονται μικρότερες ή μεγαλύτερες ηλικίες». 

Στην 3η και 4η ερώτηση συζητήσαμε για τα προγράμματα που παρακολουθούν τα παιδιά και για τον τρόπο που ο εγκέφαλος μας επεξεργάζεται εικόνες.

Ερώτηση 3: Ποιες είναι οι παραστάσεις σας, τι θέμα έχουν;

Απάντηση: «Υπάρχει μια κυρία παράσταση για κάθε ηλικία αλλά και μια δευτερεύουσα σε περίπτωση που χρειαστεί φέτος το θέμα μας είναι η δημιουργία της γης.Για μεγάλα παιδιά και μεγάλους οι παραστάσεις διαρκούν περίπου 40 λεπτά ενώ οι παιδικές είναι 30 λεπτά».

Ερώτηση 4: Για ποιο λόγο οι διδακτικές ώρες είναι μικρής διάρκειας;

 Απάντηση: «Ο λόγος που συμβαίνει αυτό και δεν είναι σαν ταινία σινεμά και δεν είναι 2 ώρες επειδή είναι τεράστιος θόλος(είναι από τους μεγαλύτερους στον κόσμο),το πλανητάριο μας είναι από τα καλύτερα στον κόσμο η εικόνα που μας περιβάλλει είναι σχεδόν ένα στρέμμα όποτε οι προσλαμβανόμενες  εικόνες είναι πολύ έντονες για τον ανθρώπινο εγκέφαλο και δεν μπορεί να τις επεξεργαστεί ο ήχος ο οποίος είναι σαν ένα roundsystem, έρχεται ο ήχος από παντού όποτε περνούν πάρα πολλές πληροφορίες τις οποίες δεν μπορεί να επεξεργαστεί ο εγκέφαλος αλλά προσλαμβάνει και αυτό τον φορτίζει δεν μπορεί να παρακολουθήσει 2 ώρες γιατί γίνεται κουραστικό».

On the 28^th of February 2023, a passenger train and a cargo train collided at Tempi in Greece. The cause of this incident was human error, a lack of modern, automatic safety equipment and a lack of railway personnel responsible for the traffic. This resulted in the collision of the trains killing 57 people and injuring 85 a lot of them being university students.

At 23:11 the passenger train IC62 collided with a cargo train at the railway from Athens to Thessaloniki with 350 passengers on board. The collision caused the two front carts of the passenger train to burst into flames with inside temperatures reaching 1.300 degrees Celsius after a violent explosion, completely destroying them while most of the other carts were derailed.

A lot of witnesses were traumatized by the tragedy and needed psychological therapy while a witness decided to even end his life from the shock.

A witness from the train incident, Theodore Katsioulis from the third cart was hospitalized for three days with a broken nose, minor head fractures and a body covered in wounds by the broken glass. He claims the following:

“As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw my death. I was on the ground, injured, there was darkness everywhere. I prayed. The cart was engulfed in flames. There was smoke everywhere, I couldn’t breathe, I’m still struggling to breathe. A young man was trying to break the window, when he succeeded with an iron, I got up to jump out of there. When I got closer, I saw that we were very high, I thought we were on a bridge”. What he focuses on during his confession are the reactions of those who rushed to help. Everyone was trying to help. In the darkness I heard the woman sitting next to me, asking me to help her children. I had seen them greeting their father on boarding. I took the one child in my arms, he was pale, scared and I held his hands. I told him not to be afraid and to jump out of the window. I did the same with the second child. We all helped, no one thought only of himself. I saw them a few minutes before and after the crash. When I opened my eyes and saw the fire, I went crazy. I didn’t believe that they didn’t exist, they had been debased. There are no words. It’s a tragedy. I haven’t closed an eye all these days, I can’t calm down, I can’t get the images I saw out of my mind. I lit a candle and I pray for the people who perished so unjustly», concludes Mr. Katsioulis.
