On April 16, 2023, our school went on a day trip to the islands of Delos and Mykonos. Our first destination was the small but very important archaeological site of Delos. After all the kids took a walk around the islet with our teachers explaining some things to us, we went up to the ancient theater and the Dionysus” house where we saw one of the largest and most beautiful mosaics.

Αναχωρήσαμε και πήγαμε στην Μύκονο, ένας από τους πιο τουριστικούς πλέον προορισμούς. Πολλά παιδιά επέλεξαν να κάνουν βόλτα μέσα στην πόλη του νησιού και οι περισσότεροι αποφάσισαν να ανέβουν στους γραφικούς ανεμόμυλους της Μυκόνου. Μήπως και δουν επίσης τον Πέτρο τον πελεκάνο.

We left and went to Mykonos, one of the most touristic destinations. Many children chose to stroll through the island’s city and most decided to climb the picturesque windmills of Mykonos so they could try and see Peter the Pelecan.

Ήταν μια ωραία εκδρομή που όσα παιδιά συμμετείχαν διασκέδασαν και πέρασαν ωραία!!!

It was a nice excursion where all the kids had fun and a great time !!!

This year 23 3rd-Year High School students had the opportunity to take part in the 1st Interschool Spelling Bee Competition going against 21 3rd-year students of Archilochos Junior High School. 

It wasn’t the first time students from Paros Junior High School competed in a Spelling Bee competition.The spellers had competed last year too, as 2nd-year students.

It all started out with a Preliminary competition, went on to Semi-Finals, where the 44 students-spellers from both schools made their way to the Final Competition

The Finals were hosted by Paros Junior High and took place on May 17, 2023 almost at the end of the school year. The competition was held at the «Yangos Argyropoulos» hall (Polygoniko) of Paros Senior High School, making it first-time event  to ever take place on Paros and especially between school.It is a feat which intrigued and enticed competitors and audience to repeat such an event. The spellers” classmates and the Teaching Staff  of both schools composed the audience which cheered and applauded each and every competitor.

The Spelling Bee Competition was a project undertaken by English teachers -Ms.Angeliki Karavas and Ms Lilian Samara-both being vice -principals at Paros Junior High School and Archilochos Junior High School respectively.

Project coordinators from Paros High School was also: Ms. Panagio Nastou, Ms. Vagia Goula, Ms. Eftychia Gkolia. Recording the event with a video camera recorder in hand was Ms. Vassiliki Ragoussi.

The purpose of this competition is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them in all their activities when using English as a foreign language. It is also a great way to motivate students to paticipate in school events.

Hopefully we will see you next year with another Spelling Bee competition!!!

Με πρωτοβουλία του εκπαιδευτικού του σχολείου μας κ. Χαράλαμπου Σοφιού και με την βοήθεια συναδέλφων οργανώθηκε και πραγματοποιήθηκε στην αίθουσα «Γιάγκος Αργυρόπουλος» (ΠΟΛΥΓΩΝΙΚΟ) του Γενικού Λυκείου Πάρου παρουσίαση του Συλλόγου Περίθαλψης και Προστασίας Άγριων Ζώων «Αλκυόνη» από το μέλος του κ. Μάριο Φουρνάρη, στα πλαίσια των δράσεων ευαισθητοποίησης των μαθητών σε θέματα φυσικού περιβάλλοντος και της κλιματικής αλλαγής. Την παρουσίαση παρακολούθησαν όλοι οι μαθητές του σχολείου και των τριών τάξεων χωρισμένοι σε δυο ομάδες λόγω της περιορισμένης χωρητικότητας της αίθουσας.

If you are a tourist in Paros you should visit a park which is known as «Butterflies Nature Reserve». It is located a few kilometers away from Paroikia, near the monastery of St. Arsenios. It is a park with paths and steps which make your walk through the park easy. The park is open to public from June to September. During the summer, flocks of butterflies are settled in the leaves and trunks of the trees. When they fly the beauty of their colors is revealed; the red of their wings and the black and white of their body are mixed together. This species rests during the day and flies at night. The place is a unique habitat where the dense vegetation, the idyllic scenery and the spring water make it a landmark of Paros island.

ΜΙΑ ΔΟΣΗ ΑΠΟ ΠΕΤΑΛΟΥΔΕΣ

Αν είσαι από την Πάρο, θα πρέπει να επισκεφτείς ένα πάρκο γνωστό ως «Βιότοπος Πεταλούδες». Βρίσκεται λίγα χιλιόμετρα από την Παροικία κοντά στο Μοναστήρι του Αγίου Αρσενίου. Είναι ένα πάρκο με μονοπάτια και σκαλιά που διευκολύνουν το περπάτημα μέσα σ” αυτό. Το πάρκο είναι ανοιχτό στο κοινό από τον Ιούνιο έως Σεπτέμβριο. Κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού, σμήνη από πεταλούδες εγκαθίστανται στο φύλλωμα και στους κορμούς των δέντρων. Όταν πετάνε, αποκαλύπτεται όλη η ομορφιά τους: το κόκκινο των φτερών τους αναμειγνύεται με το ασπρόμαυρο του σώματός τους. Αυτό το είδος ξεκουράζεται κατά την διάρκεια της ημέρας και πετά τη νύχτα. Το Πάρκο είναι μοναδικό και αποτελεί ένα βιότοπο όπου η πυκνή βλάστηση, το ειδυλλιακό τοπίο και το πηγαίο νερό το καθιστούν αξιοθέατο στην Πάρο.

The last Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox has been established by the World Health Organization as the World Sleep Day. This specific day for 2023 is the 17th of March. The aim of this day is the awareness on sleep issues. Recent studies showed that the duration as well as the quality of sleep are essential in order our body to rest. Sleep provides a lot of benefits to our organism and also helps in learning since the new knowledge is strengthened and students concentrate on their study better. Thus a good sleep is necessary for the students” performance at school and adolescents should realize the value of sleep in order to be helped and succeed academically.

Η τελευταία Παρασκευή πριν την Εαρινή Ισημερία έχει καθιερωθεί από τον Παγκόσμιο Οργανισμό Υγείας να γιορτάζεται ως Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Ύπνου. Για το 2023 η μέρα αυτή είναι η 17η Μαρτίου. Σκοπός της ημέρας αυτής είναι η ευαισθητοποίηση πάνω σε θέματα ύπνου. Πρόσφατες μελέτες έδειξαν ότι η διάρκεια  καθώς επίσης η ποιότητα του ύπνου, είναι απαραίτητες προκειμένου το σώμα μας να ξεκουραστεί. Ο ύπνος παρέχει πολλά οφέλη στον οργανισμό μας και είναι επίσης ευεργετικός στη μάθηση καθώς η νέα γνώση αφομοιώνεται και οι μαθητές συγκεντρώνονται στη μελέτη τους καλύτερα. Συνεπώς ένας καλός ύπνος είναι απαραίτητος για την επίδοση των μαθητών στο σχολείο και οι έφηβοι θα πρέπει να συνειδητοποιήσουν την αξία του ύπνου για να βοηθηθούν και αν πετύχουν ακαδημαϊκά.

I’m here to talk about the cruel life animals are living as they are found on the road. I’m a witness to many cases of neglect and accidents, it breaks my heart seeing how poorly people treat animals. If you decide to abandon an animal after giving it false hopes of a better life what was the point of putting in the effort? Don’t leave it stranded. Better give it to a family member or a friend , or even take it to a shelter where they can put it up for adoption. Neglect shouldn’t be an option.

I’m baffled to see so many heartless and selfish people have an opportunity to abuse and take advantage of animals. Another thing. If you see an animal in distress, a critical condition/state, it isn’t one of Hercules labours to call someone  willing to take in a pet or a vet/animal shelter. An animal in the middle of the road shouldn’t be target practice for some drivers. I’m disgusted to say there are genuinely people who purposefully run animals over. Truly I’ve seen a neighbour of mine physically trying to hit a cat that was crossing the road. Thankfully the cat was able to cross the road in time, therefore my neighbour not only failed his »target practice» but he showed his true care for animals.

Please, I’m aware my article won’t magically change selfish, egotistical drivers and their behaviour on the road but I can only hope it’ll make those around them aware of their actions. Animals were here before us. We invaded their homes. They shouldn’t pay with their life for our wrong doings. I can’t stress this enough, if an animal needs help, try as much as you can, whether that’s taking them to the vet and leaving them or moving them, when hit, on the side so it doesn’t get run over and call for help so there’s a possibility of saving it.

Είμαι εδώ για να μιλήσω για την κακή ζωή που τα ζώα ζουν καθώς βρίσκονται στο δρόμο. Είμαι μάρτυρας πολλών περιπτώσεων παραμέλησης και ατυχημάτων, σπάει η καρδιά μου βλέποντας πόσο κακά αντιμετωπίζουν τα ζώα. Εάν αποφασίσετε να εγκαταλείψετε ένα ζώο αφού του δώσετε ψευδείς ελπίδες για μια καλύτερη ζωή, ποιος ήταν ο λόγος της προσπάθειάς σας; Μην το εγκαταλείπετε. Καλύτερα να το δώσετε σε ένα μέλος της οικογένειας ή έναν φίλο, ή ακόμα και να το μεταφέρετε σε ένα καταφύγιο όπου μπορούν να το βάλουν για υιοθεσία. Η παραμέληση δεν πρέπει να αποτελεί επιλογή.

Μου φαίνεται παράξενο να βλέπω τόσους πολλούς άκαρδους και εγωιστές άνθρωποι να έχουν την ευκαιρία να καταχραστούν και να επωφεληθούν από τα ζώα. Ένα άλλο πράγμα. Εάν βλέπετε ένα ζώο που βρίσκεται σε κίνδυνο, σε κρίσιμη κατάσταση, δεν είναι ένας από τους άθλους του Ηρακλή να καλέσετε κάποιον που είναι πρόθυμος να πάρει ένα κατοικίδιο ζώο ή να μιλήσει σε ένα κτηνίατρο / καταφύγιο ζώων. Ένα ζώο στη μέση του δρόμου δεν πρέπει να είναι σκοποβολή για ορισμένους οδηγούς. Νοιώθω αηδία όταν λέω ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι έτοιμοι να πατήσουν σκοπίμως με το αυτοκίνητο τα ζώα. Πραγματικά έχω δει έναν γείτονά μου να προσπαθήσει να χτυπήσει με το αυτοκίνητό του μια γάτα που διέσχιζε το δρόμο. Ευτυχώς η γάτα ήταν σε θέση να διασχίσει το δρόμο εγκαίρως, και έτσι ο γείτονάς μου όχι μόνο απέτυχε την «πρακτική -στόχο» του, αλλά έδειξε την αληθινή του «αγάπη» για τα ζώα.

Παρακαλώ, γνωρίζω ότι το άρθρο μου δεν θα αλλάξει μαγικά εγωιστικούς οδηγούς και τη συμπεριφορά τους στο δρόμο, αλλά μπορώ μόνο να ελπίζω ότι θα κάνει τους γύρω τους να γνωρίζουν τις πράξεις τους. Τα ζώα ήταν εδώ πριν από μας. Εισβάλαμε στα σπίτια τους. Δεν πρέπει να πληρώνουν με τη ζωή τους για τις λανθασμένες πράξεις μας. Δεν μπορώ να τονίσω αυτό αρκετά, αν ένα ζώο χρειάζεται βοήθεια, δοκιμάστε όσο μπορείτε, είτε τα παίρνετε στον κτηνίατρο και αφήνοντας τους ή μετακινήστε τα, όταν είναι χτυπημένα,  ώστε να μην το πατήσει αυτοκίνητο και καλέστε για βοήθεια, για να υπάρχει πιθανότητα να το σώσετε.
