As we all know, Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose skill and intelligence, perhaps more than that of any other figure, and he epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. However, have you ever wondered how this extremely well-known artist, this legend of a man, came to be? Well, we have the answer!
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the small town of Vinci, near Florence, Italy. Leonardo’s parents were unmarried at the time of his birth. His father, Ser Piero, was a Florentine notary and landlord, and his mother, Caterina, was a young peasant woman who shortly thereafter married an artisan. Leonardo grew up on his father’s family’s estate, Despite this, his father acknowledged him and ensured that he received a basic education in reading, writing, and arithmetic.and received the usual elementary education of that day: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Leonardo did not seriously study Latin, the key language of traditional learning, until much later, when he acquired a working knowledge of it on his own. He also did not apply himself to higher mathematics—advanced geometry and arithmetic—until he was 30 years old, when he began to study it with diligent tenacity. It is important to note that Leonardo did not receive formal schooling in Greek or Latin, the core subjects of traditional scholarly education at the time.
From an early age, Leonardo displayed an extraordinary talent for drawing and observation. Recognizing his son’s potential, Ser Piero arranged for him to apprentice under Andrea del Verrocchio, a prominent artist in Florence. During his time in Verrocchio’s workshop, Leonardo mastered various artistic techniques, including painting, sculpting, and mechanical design. His natural curiosity and keen observational skills set him apart from his peers.
