A few words about the characters.
Elizabeth Bennet: She is smart and speaks from her mind. She does not care what others think and wants to marry only for love, not for money.
Mr. Darcy: At first, he seems rude, but later we see that he is actually kind, a bit shy but really cares about Elizabeth.
Jane Bennet: She is sweet and always thinks the best of people. She is calm and kind to everyone.
Charles Bingley: He is friendly and funny too. He really likes Jane despite the of opinion others.
Charlotte Lucas: She is not very romantic. She marries for her own safety and finance, not for love.
What is the woman’s position and the purpose of marriage in Jane Austen’s time?
A woman’s position in Jane Austen’s time was very limited. Women had no right to inherit nothing from their families and were financially dependent on marriage. Societies judged them based on beauty, behavior and their ability to find a good husband.
Marriage was mainly a social and economic arrangement, not necessarily based on love. Women were expected to marry for stability, not romance. Elizabeth though chooses love over convenience and stands out as a progressive figure of her time.
