Amina, a fictional character, is a high school student who recently entered our school from Syria. Amina has been wearing a headscarf for many years. But now it’s time for her to reconsider whether she will continue to wear it or not. Her personal choice will depend on the arguments of her classmates.
Lily, her best friend, advises:
“Wear it with confidence and don’t care what other people think. It is your personal choice, and everyone should accept it. True friends will love you and accept you as you are. The scarf suits you very well and adds to your unique style”.
Sophie, Amina’s classmate, disagrees. She argues:
“I think Amina shouldn’t wear a headscarf because it’s old-fashioned and restricts her to sports and hot weather. In addition, the headscarf symbolizes patriarchal and misogynistic values and is no longer mandatory”.
The important thing is that Amina has heard everyone’s opinion but is free to make up her own mind. In this case, the students representing Amina concluded,
“I want to keep wearing my headscarf because it’s part of my religion and traditions that keep my community together. I don’t want to feel different from my people. Although it can make my everyday life difficult, I feel comfortable wearing it because it is part of who I am, my culture and my family”.
