                             SKIATHOS ISLAND by Helen Xylopodarou

Skiathos is a Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea, part of the Sporades Archipelagos.

In 338 BC. Skiathos came under the rule of the Macedonians and so the island liv
ed undisturbed for many years. Historically, it reappears from the time of the Macedonian king Philip V, during the period when it was at war with the Romans (200-199 BC), when the island was destroyed during the military operations and the action of the Roman fleet.

The Castle according to the prevailing view was founded in the 14th century, around 1360. Due to piracy, the Skiathians left the Byzantine city, which was where the city of Skiathos is today, and built the medieval settlement of Kastro, at the northern end of the island. . As the fortress was inaccessible from the sea and the entrance to it was possible only with the movable wooden bridge, it provided the inhabitants with relative protection.
The Castle was under Byzantine rule from 1360 until the fall at the 1453.

Skiathos is full of green, it has  mountains and very beautiful beaches. In the town the winter is very lonely and cold but in  the summer the island floods with people. The shops close when it gets October and the people leave but the most popular restaurants are staying open all the winter.

At Christmas Skiathos is decorated.

The big Christmas tree is standing in front of   the Bourtzi, which in the past was a fortress for protecting the city of pirates.

The most popular sights on the island are Bourtzi, the museum of A. Papadiamantis, the Castle, Saint Nicholas and more…
