MODEL UNITED NATIONS
What is MUN?
The MUN is a 3-day simulation of the work of the United Nations. Senior High School students attend the conference to represent their nation in the General Assembly and its committees, the Economic and Social Council, and the Security Council, among other UN venues. English is the conference’s official language.
Why should you participate?
Students have the chance to work on and discuss global topics that frequently go unreported by the media, gain a greater understanding of how international diplomacy operates, and develop their rhetorical skills. For individuals who are interested in learning more about the UN, model UN simulations are very well-liked. At all levels of education, from primary school to university, it is estimated that more than 400,000 students worldwide take part in Model UN each year. Today’s top figures in politics, industry, the legal profession, and the arts have all previously taken part in Model UN conferences.
Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations
«Expand your horizons in the simulations of the UN (Model United Nations). Through learning and networking you can be part of the United Nations” efforts to build peace, protect Human Rights and enable all people to live in dignity.”
Yet, the question of what is MUN is answered in the best way only by those who attend the conference.
Our experience
We live in a world of great demands and intense challenges. Knowledge as well as skills are necessary resources for the young people to be active members of a democratic, diverse and open society based on the participation of citizens, the exchange of values and the ability to think critically.
This year our school had the opportunity to participate in ATSMUN Hybrid conference that took place in the city of Patras, November 3-6. Through this, we had the chance to meet people with many ambitions for the future of the United Nations, to discuss together and propose solutions to some of the most important problems we face today with prudence and logic. We got to know the procedure that is followed in the real meetings of the UN and by following the rules, we managed to cooperate, create alliances and develop our rhetorical skills through debates. We forgot “I” and adopted “we” and thus we managed to think and respect the common good. Since the official language of the conference is English, we were given the opportunity to develop our linguistic skill as well as oratory skills as we had to deliver speeches in front of an audience.
The Model United Nations is not just a simple conference, as we had imagined. It’s a rare experience that you can get a lot out of, that shouldn’t be missed and should be had at least once during your time as a student!
