EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES

The European Day of Languages (EDL) was first celebrated in 2001 during the European year of languages. At the end of this event, it was decided to celebrate EDL each 26th September. Every year, millions of people of European States organize activities to encourage the ability to speak other languages including those who are less spoken. The main purpose of this day is to alert the public to the importance of language learning and to explore the world of different cultures.

To honor EDL, my class and the English teacher, did a project which each one of us drew in a colorful piece of paper the word “Good morning” in different languages. We went to the principal’s office to present the project, we took photos and in the end, everyone spoke “Good Morning” in the language each one represented. Before our return to class, we shouted “Good Morning” in Greek. It was a great celebration and I’m hoping to repeat it next year.
