Με αφορμή τον εορτασμό της 25ης Μαρτίου ας θυμηθούμε ότι ο αγώνας των Ελλήνων για ανεξαρτησία άγγιξε ανθρώπους και έξω από τα στενά όρια του ελλαδικού χώρου. Ειδικότερα, η Έξοδος του Μεσολογγίου αναζωπύρωσε το φιλελληνικό ρεύμα και η Ελληνική Επανάσταση ενέπνευσε τους φιλελεύθερους ποιητές και διανοούμενους.
Αγγλόφωνοι ποιητές και από τις δύο πλευρές του Ατλαντικού απηύθυναν εκκλήσεις για συμμετοχή και στήριξη του αγώνα των Ελλήνων. Άλλοι, δεκαετίες μετά, εξύμνησαν τα κατορθώματα των Ελλήνων σ’ έναν φαινομενικά μάταιο αγώνα.
Ο θαυμασμός και η έμπρακτη στήριξη προς τους Έλληνες αποτυπώθηκε σε πλήθος ποιημάτων, περισσότερο και λιγότερο γνωστών ποιητών: Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, J.M.D., Laurence, James Gates Percival, William Cullen Bryant, George Washington Doane, Edward Pinkney και πολλοί άλλοι.
