We used the Six Hats Debate Technique to discuss whether or not to accept refugees in our fictional state of Harmonyville. Many different opinions were heard before we decided.

Yellow Hat argued that welcoming and socializing with refugees will enrich our traditions and knowledge of the world. It will also contribute positively to the workforce since the collaboration with people with diverse skills and knowledge will fostering innovation and creativity.

Black Hat has expressed concerns about mixing with refugees as it fears potential culture clashes. In addition, there is concern that the influx of refugees will jeopardize local jobs by increasing competition. In addition, there is a fear that crime rates will rise, particularly if refugees feel marginalized.

Green Hat proposed organizing events with refugees to facilitate the exchange of experiences. It also suggested that we educate them about our laws so that they follow them and avoid problems. Most importantly, we should provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their independence and mobility, enabling them to go freely wherever they choose.

White Hat pointed out that crime rates in the surrounding areas have not increased as a result of the refugees, considering their population size.

Red Hat experienced mixed feelings. On the one hand, it felt compassion for its fellow human beings, recognizing that history shows how each of us could find ourselves in the refugee’s position. On the other hand, it felt intense anxiety, dissatisfaction and uncertainty about the changes that will accompany the arrival of the refugees. However, it also felt understanding, recognizing that refugees are not solely responsible for their circumstances, as they often have no control over the events that force them to flee their homes.

The Mayor considered all views and decided to accept the refugees, prioritizing their education about the law and strengthening skills for independence and mobility. We also committed to revisiting the matter if new evidence comes to light.

Amina, a fictional character, is a high school student who recently entered our school from Syria. Amina has been wearing a headscarf for many years. But now it’s time for her to reconsider whether she will continue to wear it or not. Her personal choice will depend on the arguments of her classmates.

Lily, her best friend, advises:

“Wear it with confidence and don’t care what other people think. It is your personal choice, and everyone should accept it. True friends will love you and accept you as you are. The scarf suits you very well and adds to your unique style”.

New Recording 635

Sophie, Amina’s classmate, disagrees. She argues:

“I think Amina shouldn’t wear a headscarf because it’s old-fashioned and restricts her to sports and hot weather. In addition, the headscarf symbolizes patriarchal and misogynistic values and is no longer mandatory”.

New Recording 637

The important thing is that Amina has heard everyone’s opinion but is free to make up her own mind. In this case, the students representing Amina concluded,

“I want to keep wearing my headscarf because it’s part of my religion and traditions that keep my community together. I don’t want to feel different from my people. Although it can make my everyday life difficult, I feel comfortable wearing it because it is part of who I am, my culture and my family”.

Silence speaks volumes worldwide. In Asia waiting is polite, Americans and Eastern Europeans rush to fill the gap, Africans enjoy intimacy without words.

Rumi, a Persian poet, said, “Listen to the silence. It has so much to say”.

This is our poem about Silence.

Together in Silence.

In silence we can share the words we don’t know.

In silence we can share the sob of every pain.

In silence we can breathe the same air.

In the silence we feel the morning dip of the sun.

In the silence we can hear the music of smiling faces.

In silence we can share the first steps of a toddler.

In silence we can trust the opening of our hearts.

In silence we can weave tomorrow. Together.

Tongans in the South Pacific lower their heads to show respect. You can visit their homes, even uninvited, especially on Sundays when businesses are closed and transport does not operate, according to Tongan law.

Tongans usually take off their shoes when entering houses. Most meals are enjoyed on woven mats on the floor. Men sit cross-legged on the floor, while women fold their legs back. Guests are served first, and small children are seated separately so as not to disturb the elderly. Do not bring food to share at a meal. It is considered rude as it implies that the host has not prepared enough food.

Gifts commonly exchanged between hosts and guests include mats, flower necklaces, beads or shells, and small gifts for children. Finally, it is customary to make a small speech before leaving to thank your hosts.

In China, it is polite to use both hands when giving or receiving objects as a sign of respect. Bowing softly to the elders is customary.

When invited to a home, avoid bringing very expensive gifts, as they may refuse them. Sweets, fruit, flowers (other than the white ones used at funerals)or soft drinks are good choices. Do not give sharp objects (such as knives), green hats, or items related to the number «four», which sounds like «death» in Chinese.

You should deny everything before accepting it as a sign of shyness. When you eat, try everything they have to offer and leave some food on your plate to show satisfaction. Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in the rice bowl as it symbolizes bad luck.

Non-verbal communication refers to all the ways we use to communicate without using our voice. It includes gestures, body movements and posture, eyes, touch, facial expressions. For example, when we frown, we all know something is wrong! However, non-verbal cues do not have the same meaning around the world. Take a moment to think about spitting. What can this disgusting habit mean in Greece? Read the cartoon below and find out.

In both ancient and modern Greece, the idea of citizen participation in decision-making has been highly valued. Furthermore, the pursuit of knowledge and education has been a constant value throughout Greek history. The ancient Greeks valued spiritual pursuits and this habit survives to this day. Finally, the value of family remains the same, as both ancient and modern Greeks emphasize close relationships and supportive communities.
