Riace is a small, isolated village in Calabria, southern Italy, and one of the most famous real examples of humane refugee integration. The story began in 1998, when around 200 Kurdish refugees arrived on its shore. Local council member Domenico “Mimmo” Lucano helped them, and soon created a project called Città Futura to renovate abandoned houses and offer refugees real homes instead of temporary camps. From 2004 to 2018, as mayor, Lucano expanded the program through Italy’s national SPRAR system, providing housing, Italian-language classes, and jobs in local workshops such as weaving, carpentry, and food production. All the while simultaneously hoping to repopulate more villages, connect with as many countries as possible, bring hope and a better future to everyone involved. The goal was twofold: to give refugees dignity and independence, and to revive a village that was almost empty, though the plan was indeed controversial, facing challenges such as racism, lack of funding for refugee-minors without guardians from the government, etc. All in all, Riace became an international model of community-based refugee integration.
