Tokyo has two very different sides. The old part of the city is called Shitamachi. This area was the downtown center during the Edo period (1603–1867). It has narrow streets, small shops, and many traditional buildings.
The newer part of Tokyo shows how modern and high-tech the city is. After World War II, Tokyo grew very quickly. Today, especially on the western side of the city, you can see tall buildings, bright neon lights, and amazing technology.
Tokyo is built on flat land called the Kanto Plain. It is next to Tokyo Bay, on the southeastern coast of Honshu, the largest island in Japan.
Even though Tokyo is a very big and busy city, it also has a lot of nature. There are mountains, forests, and even islands that belong to Tokyo. Mount Kumotori is the highest mountain in Tokyo. The Ogasawara Islands have a warm, subtropical climate and are a special World Natural Heritage site.
In fact, about 36% of Tokyo is protected as natural parks. So even in this huge city, there is still a lot of beautiful nature.
