The following list is about our favorite movies chosen by personal opinions in terms of plot and production. It should be mentioned that all of them are based on real events.

There was no other way

  Even after the Civil War had ended in the rest of Greece, a small rump of the Democratic Army, six men and two women, remained in hiding for 14 years in Chania, Crete, where they continued to take part in illegal political activity. In 1962, six of the former partisans escaped, via Italy, to Tashkent. The documentary focuses on the three who are still alive.
The film reveals the miraculous endurance of the broken remnants of the Democratic Army and the self-sacrifice of the ordinary people who hid them. It shows that the main protagonists and the unsung heroes of this story are equally exceptional, embodying not just ideology, but a deep dedication to mankind and human dignity.

American Sniper

  The «American Sniper» is an American biographical war film of 2014 and is based on based on true story .The main character of the movie is Chris Kyle a soldier of seal navy and especially the best rifleman in the American history. Chris Kyle became soldier at the age of 30.When he was young he dreamed to be a cowboy but later he decided to enlist in the navy so he qualified for special training and became a U.S. Navy SEALs sniper. The American navy sent him to fight in Iraq after the September 11 attacks of 2001.John was one of the most talented sniper and he earned the nickname «Legend» for his many kills. His most important shot was when he killed Mustafa who was an Olympic champion on shooting at a distance of 1920 meters .Years later he returned back to his wife and children but he could not stay away from the battlefield so he decided with his psychiatrist to help severely wounded veterans in the VA hospital. On February 2, 2013 he was killed that day by a veteran he was trying to help . Chris Kyle was deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War. At his funeral many American citizens had been there to say goodbye to their best soldier.

The Revenant

  The Revenant is an adventure-drama movie, nominated for 12 Oscars, which is praised for its amazing plot and its extraordinary directing. It came out last month and it is literally a masterpiece given the fact that it has won so many awards in so little time.

The story is set in the 1820’s in the uncharted American wilderness where Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his fellow hunters are attacked by native Indians. After managing to escape Glass is brutally mauled by a bear and abandoned by his own hunting team which forces him to seek for survival. Finally, when he recovers from his wounds he takes revenge for his team’s betrayal making him uable to continue his life normally.

The movie is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and in the leading role is the well-known Leonardo DiCaprio. There is no doubt that the acting is excellent and the storyline is cliff hungering as it was expected. The explosive special effects will make you speechless and the editing is just unbelievable. On the other hand it is quite violent due to the large number of war scenes and the majority of the scenes are in a snowed landscape usually forest.

In conclusion, the Revenant is a great movie that most adventure fans will adore. It has nearly no drawbacks so I consider it is one of the best of its kind. I would definitely suggest it to anyone who loves excitement and I reckon it is a fantastic option in terms of drama.

BATMAN

Batman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger,and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939). Originally named «the Bat-Man», the character is also referred to by such epithets as the «Caped Crusader», the «Dark Knight«, and the «World’s Greatest Detective».

Batman’s secret identity is Bruce Wayne, an American billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, and owner of Wayne Enterprises. After witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, he swore revenge on criminals, an oath tempered by a sense of justice. Wayne trains himself both physically and intellectually and crafts a bat-inspiredpersona to fight crime. Batman operates in the fictional Gotham City, with assistance from various supporting characters, including his butler Alfred, police commissioner Jim Gordon, and vigilante allies such as Robin. Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers; rather, he relies on his genius intellect, physical prowess, martial arts abilities, detective skills, science and technology, vast wealth, provocation of fear and intimidation, and an indomitable will. A large assortment of villains make up Batman’s rogues gallery, including his archenemy the Joker.

Batman became popular soon after his introduction and gained his own comic book title, Batman, in 1940. As the decades went on, differing interpretations of the character emerged. The late 1960s Batman television series used a camp aesthetic, which continued to be associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his dark roots, culminating in 1986 with The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. The success of Warner Bros.“ live-action Batman feature films have subsequently helped maintain public interest in the character.

Creation

In early 1939, the success of Superman in Action Comics prompted editors at the comic book division of National Publications (the future DC Comics) to request more superheroes for its titles. In response, Bob Kanecreated «the Bat-Man». Collaborator Bill Finger recalled that «Kane had an idea for a character called “Batman,” and he’d like me to see the drawings. I went over to Kane’s, and he had drawn a character who looked very much like Superman with kind of … reddish tights, I believe, with boots … no gloves, no gauntlets … with a small domino mask, swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings. And under it was a big sign … BATMAN». The bat-wing-like cape was suggested by Bob Kane, inspired as he was by Leonardo Da Vinci“s sketch of an ornithopter flying device as a child.

Finger suggested giving the character a cowl instead of a simple domino mask, a cape instead of wings, and gloves; he also recommended removing the red sections from the original costume.Finger said he devised the name Bruce Wayne for the character’s secret identity: «Bruce Wayne’s first name came from Robert Bruce, theScottish patriot, Chief of the Knights Templar. Bruce, being a playboy, was a man of gentry. I searched for a name that would suggest colonialism. I tried Adams, Hancock … then I thought of Mad Anthony Wayne.»[19] He later said his suggestions were influenced by Lee Falk“s popular The Phantom, a syndicated newspaper comic-strip character with which Kane was familiar as well.

Kane and Finger drew upon contemporary 1930s popular culture for inspiration regarding much of the Bat-Man’s look, personality, methods, and weaponry. Details find predecessors in pulp fiction, comic strips, newspaper headlines, and autobiographical details referring to Kane himself.[21] As an aristocratic hero with a double identity, the Bat-Man had predecessors in the Scarlet Pimpernel (created by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, 1903) and Zorro (created by Johnston McCulley, 1919). Like them, he performed his heroic deeds in secret, averted suspicion by playing the fool in public, and marked his work with a signature symbol. Kane specifically noted the influence of the films The Mark of Zorro (1920) and The Bat Whispers (1930) in the creation of the character’s iconography. Finger, drawing inspiration from pulp heroes like Doc Savage, The Shadow, Dick Tracy, and Sherlock Holmes, made the character a master sleuth.

SPIDERMAN

Creation and development

In 1962, with the success of the Fantastic Four, Marvel Comics editor and head writer Stan Lee was casting about for a new superhero idea. He said the idea for Spider-Man arose from a surge in teenage demand for comic books, and the desire to create a character with whom teens could identify. In his autobiography, Lee cites the non-superhuman pulp magazine crime fighter the Spider (see also The Spider’s Web and The Spider Returns) as a great influence, and in a multitude of print and video interviews, Lee stated he was further inspired by seeing a spider climb up a wall—adding in his autobiography that he has told that story so often he has become unsure of whether or not this is true. At that time Lee had to get only the consent of Marvel publisher Martin Goodman for the character’s approval. In a 1986 interview, Lee described in detail his arguments to overcome Goodman’s objections. Goodman eventually agreed to a Spider-Man tryout in what Lee in numerous interviews recalled as what would be the final issue of the science-fiction and supernatural anthology series Amazing Adult Fantasy, which was renamed Amazing Fantasy for that single issue, #15 (cover-dated August 1962, on sale June 5, 1962). While this was indeed the final issue, its editorial page anticipated the comic continuing and that «The Spiderman [sic] … will appear every month in Amazing.»

Regardless, Lee received Goodman’s approval for the name Spider-Man and the «ordinary teen» concept, and approached artist Jack Kirby. As comics historian Greg Theakston recounts, Kirby told Lee about an unpublished character on which he had collaborated with Joe Simon in the 1950s, in which an orphaned boy living with an old couple finds a magic ring that granted him superhuman powers. Lee and Kirby «immediately sat down for a story conference», Theakston writes, and Lee afterward directed Kirby to flesh out the character and draw some pages. Steve Ditko would be the inker. When Kirby showed Lee the first six pages, Lee recalled, «I hated the way he was doing it! Not that he did it badly—it just wasn’t the character I wanted; it was too heroic». Lee turned to Ditko, who developed a visual style Lee found satisfactory. Ditko recalled:

One of the first things I did was to work up a costume. A vital, visual part of the character. I had to know how he looked … before I did any breakdowns. For example: A clinging power so he wouldn’t have hard shoes or boots, a hidden wrist-shooter versus a web gun and holster, etc. … I wasn’t sure Stan would like the idea of covering the character’s face but I did it because it hid an obviously boyish face. It would also add mystery to the character….

Although the interior artwork was by Ditko alone, Lee rejected Ditko’s cover art and commissioned Kirby to pencil a cover that Ditko inked. As Lee explained in 2010, «I think I had Jack sketch out a cover for it because I always had a lot of confidence in Jack’s covers.»

In an early recollection of the character’s creation, Ditko described his and Lee’s contributions in a mail interview with Gary Martin published in Comic Fan #2 (Summer 1965): «Stan Lee thought the name up. I did costume, web gimmick on wrist & spider signal.» At the time, Ditko shared a Manhattan studio with noted fetish artist Eric Stanton, an art-school classmate who, in a 1988 interview with Theakston, recalled that although his contribution to Spider-Man was «almost nil», he and Ditko had «worked on storyboards together and I added a few ideas. But the whole thing was created by Steve on his own… I think I added the business about the webs coming out of his hands.»

Kirby disputed Lee’s version of the story, and claimed Lee had minimal involvement in the character’s creation. According to Kirby, the idea for Spider-Man had originated with Kirby and Joe Simon, who in the 1950s had developed a character called the Silver Spider for the Crestwood Publications comic Black Magic, who was subsequently not used. Simon, in his 1990 autobiography, disputed Kirby’s account, asserting that Black Magic was not a factor, and that he (Simon) devised the name «Spider-Man» (later changed to «The Silver Spider»), while Kirby outlined the character’s story and powers. Simon later elaborated that his and Kirby’s character conception became the basis for Simon’s Archie Comics superhero the Fly. Artist Steve Ditko stated that Lee liked the name Hawkman from DC Comics, and that «Spider-Man» was an outgrowth of that interest.

Despite the difficulties he faced in his past, including the divorce of his parents and the fact that they had moved more than 20 times, he was creative from a very young age. When he was 12, he received a guitar as a present from his mother, and left school to pursuit the life of a rock star.

His career in acting started with the famous series “21 Jump Street” and quickly became a much loved teen idol. In 1984 he begins acting in movies, and with Tim Burton’s film Edward Scissorhands, a success that established Depp as leading Hollywood actor and began his long cooperation with Burton, in business and in friendship.

The most popular of all the films, from the 80’s until today. “Chocolat”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, ”Charlie and the chocolate factory”, “Sweeney Todd” ,”Alice in Wonderland”, ”The Lone Ranger” are some of a great list of films which have his distinguish sign.

From my point of you, Johny Depp is not just an actor. He is a person that gives the character he resembles his special style, through the voice, the gestures, even the way he walks. The plot takes place at the American south in the fourth decade of the last century and describes the lives of two neighboring, military officers’ families. Actually, the film focuses on the deeper thoughts and the repressed desires of the heroes. Based on a 1941s best seller, it is directed by the cinema “veteran” John Huston and the main characters are impersonated by the well known, worldwide classed film stars Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. Huston manages to flesh out the psychology of his characters slowly and at the same time to make a pleasurable environment for the audience. However, where the film really shines, is the fact that it has exceptional allegories about sexual perversions like fetishism, sadomasochism, homosexuality, voyeurism and nymphomania as well as riveting social, psychological and historical references.  I was pleasantly surprised by the film’s similarities to the Freud’s psychological inventions and that’s why I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has an open mind, as a deep and thoughtful piece of art. However, unfortunately, the film is unlikely to reach a wide audience, despite the important messages, the absorbing plot and the professional performances.

 Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of «The Great Gatsby» combines the latest motion picture technology with the essence of F. S. Fitzgerald’s over 80 years old modern-classic novel in order to make cinema at its most magnificent, most excessive.

This movie has such a great power of attraction you can hardly escape from, it’s fast and dynamic – like a good party, and you as the viewer are in the center of all the exuberant happening revolving around you in a hurricane of glance and glamor; it smiles at you with a raised cocktail glass as Mr. Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) did when he welcomed Nick Carraway (T. Maguire) in his castle for the first time and from this moment on, there is only one question: What’s behind his whimsical smile?

The cinematography: the camera-work (tracking shots, pans, zooms, different perspectives, high-angle shots, &c.), the 3D effect that suited well the pomp, the editing (fast cuts, time leaps, different color filters, text sequences, archive footage…) as well as a cool, contemporary score with jazzy remixes of known hits by various artists such as Beyonce or Lana Del Rey, is what makes this movie stand out beside a very strong cast with DiCaprio’s intriguing performance at it’s top. The «Roaring Twenties» were never more vital and the old New York never shone brighter or was dirtier (like in the «Valley of Ashes») than in this motion picture I acknowledge as a really good piece of art which I refuse to compare with «Moulin Rouge» (as some critics did) since it is neither a musical nor a comedy although it certainly had one or two humorous scenes.

Carey Mulligan as Gatsby’s love interest Daisy Buchanan is a delight to behold like a rare pearl you long to call your own, of a fragile and tender nature torn apart between Gatsby and her jealous husband who is played by J. Edgerton with such hypocritical arrogance that you cannot but find him unlikable in a positive way. Only Jordan Baker (E. Debicki) disappoints because she plays a rather shallow role which should have been a somehow emancipated opposite to a dependent woman of the 1920′s who Daisy certainly is. N. Carraway recounts the tale in retrospect using Fitzgerald’s powerful prose, a tale not so much of a tragical love affair as of a mysterious billionaire who is enormously wealthy and yet unhappy for the one true love of his life is married to another man.

This movie aroused my wish to read the book again and this is indeed a good sign: highly recommendable!

A sharp decline in the number of cinema audiences was observed in a recent survey conducted by post-graduate students at the University of Kent. More specifically, 35% fewer viewers went to the cinemas which are scattered over the nation. The students attributed the dwindling numbers to a variety of factors, which emerged during the interviews with frequent cinema-goers.

The most prominent factor, according to the survey, was the existing recession currently affecting the whole population. The price of the tickets was mentioned by the vast majority of the participants in the survey as being the main reason why they reduced their visits to the cinemas. They consider the ticket to be more expensive than what the average person can afford. On top of that, things are definitely worse for families with children, who view the total cost of tickets as being “far beyond their means” as many family men quoted.

The second contributory factor was the expansion of the Internet. The wide range of movies available for downloading or viewing “at the click of a button” was quoted by many people as the reason why they prefer to enjoy the comforts and conveniences of their own homes rather than the big screen. It is also worth mentioning that those questioned were undeterred by the fact that such practices may be illegal and they could encounter problems with the law.

Last but not least, there was a small but significant number of participants who referred to low quality of the films that are being produced lately. They support that the current blockbusters and the domination of Hollywood productions are the main culprits for ever-decreasing quality in the film industry. This argument is supported by the fact that many European productions, which used to be regarded as artistic ones, fail to reach the cinemas.

All the above issues are not without consequences in many fields of the economy.

To begin with, the government loses significant sums of revenue due to tax evasion which derives from illegal downloading. Were the viewers to watch these films at cinemas, they would buy tickets which would bring some money to the state through taxation. On the other hand, the illegal practices do not bring the expected gains to the state.

The second problem which arises from the fewer tickets is the shrinking of the

cinema industry. As a result, fewer productions are made year by year and those which make it to the cinema are rarely profitable. This has dire side-effects in the number of people that are employed in the industry. On a daily basis actors,

technicians, script writers and many more are made redundant because they cannot find a film to work on. To make matters worse, these people are highly likely to remain unemployed for a very long time since they cannot find work in a different sector.

To conclude, times are changing and it is almost impossible to stem the tide of these changes. The nature of entertainment is in a changing phase and if those  involved in it do not comply with the new norms that the changes bring, they are bound to experience hardships.

The hobbit: the battle of five armies is undeniably the best of three other installments directed by Peter Jackson with more wars, more creatures and even more breath-taking effects. The first: An unexpected journey, the second: desolation of the smaug. Despite the demand of spectators for stronger emotions and more plot twists, this final film is an epic fantasy adventure film.

Our film starts with Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and the dwarves, watching the destruction of Laketown by Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). After the dragon’s death and mount Erebor occupation by Thorin the Oakenshield and his dwarf army, a conflict of interests arises between dwarves and elves for the mountain’s underground treasures. Orcs take advantage of the situation and advance against both armies. In the meantime Thorin presents a delusional behavior and gives Azog the Orc chief a strategic advantage by having his army stay idle behind the walls. With Bilbo’s crucial psychological intervention, Thorin tames his inner demons and leads his army into the battle, with a winning result for the currently allied dwarves and elves. The Orc’s assault brought in the surface the reappearance of evil forces into middle earth and predisposes the audience to the events happening in the Lord of the Ring’s trilogy.

In conclusion this movie is absolutely amazing. The plot is really interesting, the characters are fascinating and the actors really talented. However the highlight of the movie is the breathtaking special effects. As the movie comes both in 3D and 2D you can chose what suits you best but keep in mind that a movie that long, can be tiring for your eyes if you opt for the 3D. In addition, the quality of some theatres’ 3D is not that good. All in all you should definitely watch this movie , especially if you are a Middle Earth fan.

Home alone is a comedy set in Christmas time in the town of Chicago. Macaulay Culkin plays the lead role as Kevin, the 8 year old boy who must defend his home against two idiotic burglars. The roles of the burglars are played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as Harry and Marv respectively.

It is Christmas time and the Mcallister family is preparing for a vacation in Paris. But the youngest boy in the family named Kevin got into scuffle with his older brother Buzz and was sent to his room which is on the third floor of the house. Then the following morning, while the rest of the family was ready to make it to the airport on time, they completely forgot Kevin who now has all house by himself. Being home alone was fun for Kevin as he makes a mess. Then, he discovers two burglars, Harry and Marv, about to rob his house in Christmas Eve. Kevin acts quickly by wiring his own house by making booby traps to stop the burglars and bring them to justice.

The plot in addition with the acting creates a film full of hilarious scenes. The characters show the ingenuity of a young child against two idiotic burglars. Also, the fact that the movie is filmed in Christmas period makes it more emotional.

Home alone is a film worth to see whatever the age of the person is, as it offers a well-written story and entertainment at the higher levels. I highly recommend it to see, particularly during Christmas period.

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (1,341,511,219-2011

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is a 2011 epic fantasy film directed by David Yates and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It’s based on the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, alongside Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry’s best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry, Ron and Hermione search for Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord as the final battle rages on at Hogwarts.

5. Frozen ($1,277,152,791-2013)

Frozen is an animation film produced by Walt Disney Studios. It’s inspired by the fairytale “The snow queen” of Christian Andersen. When a princess with the power to turn things into ice curses her home in infinite winter, her sister, Anna teams up with a mountain man, his playful reindeer, and a snowman to change the weather condition.

Based on the popular novel ‘’The Hobbit’’, by J.R.R. Tolkien, the homonymous trilogy comes to an end with the third and last part, ‘’The Hobbit: Τhe Battle of the Five Armies’’. This trilogy is directly related to the ‘’Lord Of The Rings’’ (LOTR) trilogy. In detail, ‘’LOTR’’ was published in 2001, its first part, so as we can very easily see, even though ‘’LOTR’’ is the sequel of ‘’The Hobbit’’, the second one was published in 2012 for marketing reasons.

Millions of fans filled with exuberance when they learnt that their favorite film would be in cinema’s halls again. It was a director’s great move because he knew that the ‘’The Hobbit’’ already had many fans that would give their right arm to learn the story behind ‘’LOTR’s’’ exciting plot. As far as the last part of the trilogy is concerned, «The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies», brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug shows his enormous power and attacks the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to take it as Bilbo attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a deathly attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness rises on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

As you see, it is about a movie full of adventure and action with an exciting plot that will keep you in vigilance! A lot of great characters -played by famous actors- and strange creatures guarantee you an imaginary experience and a known end, or should I say a promising beginning…?
