Greece’s contribution to world culture!

Greece has contributed significantly to world culture with many important values and principles. It has shared very outstanding ideas with other cultures and if it were not for Greece all these might not even exist nowadays.  Some of them are:

  • The Democracy:  The world <<democracy>> was born in Athens in the 5th century B.C. This word became a global synonym for political freedom.
  • The Olympic games: The Olympic games were a kind of inspiration for the revival of the institution of sports in 1896, turning the games into the largest global sporting event, something that is still happening today. Specifically, the Olympic games have an ancient origin because they began in Ancient Greece in a city called Ancient Olympia in 776 B.C. The games were both religious and athletic events where athletes from various cities competed for honor and the wild olive branch called <<kotinos>>
  • The meaning of the word <<philosophy>>: The contribution of ancient Greek philosophy to the word culture is the <<birth>> of the modern way of thinking. Before the Greeks, people explained everything through mythology and the power of gods. The Greek philosophers made a huge revolution: They replaced myth with thinking. These Greek philosophers were:

1. Socrates:

Socrates turned philosophy from nature to society. Through questions and answers he helped his interlocutors find the truth for themselves. Socrates is the originator of modern critical thinking. He taught humanity not to accept everything <<blindly>>, but to question and examine.

2. Plato:

Plato argued that the material world around us is simply an imperfect copy of a higher world. Plato wrote the <<Republic>> the first complete work on how a just state should be organized. He laid the foundations of political idealism and <<metaphysics>> that influenced Christian theology and western political thoughts.

3. Aristotle:

Aristotle placed more importance on observing the <<physical world>> than the <<world of ideas>> as Plato believed. He classified for the first time the knowledge into specific fields: Logic, Biology, Physics, Poetics, Politics and Ethnics. Aristotle founded the <<Formal Logic>> that is the principles of how a correct conclusion is reached. Moreover, the entire modern scientific method is based on his own logic.

  • Mathematics and Physics: The ancient Greeks did not discover the practical mathematical operations, but they changed the way of thinking about numbers. Some great mathematicians helped with this. They were:

1. Thalis:

He was the first in history that proved geometric theorems. For example a circle is bisected by the diameter. Thalis used his logic rather than measurement.

2. Pythagoras:

Pythagoras was the one who invested the <<Pythagorean Theorem>> (a2 +b2=c2). The Pythagorean Theorem is for right triangles and is the most famous mathematical rule in the world.

3. Eukleidis:

Eukleidis stated that, two points pass through only one straight line. Until the early 20th century Eukleidi’s book was the standard geometry book in schools around the world. The geometry we learn in schools today is still called <<Eukleidian>>

  • Medicine: Ippokratis, a very good and important doctor of his time, established scientific medicine, while the <<Ippocratic Oath>> continues to be the oath for doctors internationally.
  • Theater: The tragedies of Aischylos, Sophocles, and Euripides as well as the comedies of Aristophanes gave birth to art and especially drama, which evolved into modern acting
  • Greek Language: The Greek language is one of the most beautiful languages in the world. In ancient times you were considered intelligent if you knew Greek. Furthermore, the richness of the Greek language helped to shape international oaths such as medicine, technology, politics as well as sciences such as mathematics and physics.
  • Epic: The Homeric epics such as the <<Iliad>> and <<Odyssey>>, are written by Homer and shaped literature and fiction.
