Our Country’s Contribution to World Culture

Written by the 2nd Grade Junior High School students Pouliou Kiriaki and Trantou Athina

πυθαγοραςThe world has been influenced by many cultures. Every culture has given something. Some of those things are used by many people without us knowing their origins. Greece is a country that has given many things to the world, such as democracy, philosophy and medicine. But the most popular thing Greece has to offer is Mathematics.

One of the greatest Greek Mathematicians is Archimedes. He is thought to be one of the greatest mathematicians worldwide. He calculated the π around 250B.C. He calculated the area of a circle and the circumference of a circle with much precision. And he proved that the volume of a sphere is the two thirds of the cylinder that contains it. Before he died he requested that this is engraved on his tomb. He was also a physician and one of his most famous discoveries was the «law of rise» while he was bathing. At that moment he said the famous words ‘eureka, eureka!’.

Another big mathematician is Pythagoras. He invented the Pythagorean theorem in the sixth century. This theorem proves that in every right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the two perpendicular sides. This theorem is known and used in almost every corner of the world.

Greece has provided the world with many other mathematicians and theorems. Many other countries have done the same but the Greek mathematicians stand out in the world of math.
