Young, gifted and Greek: Generation G – the world’s biggest brain drain

According to a recent article published  in Guardian newspaper (January 2015) more than 200,000 Greeks have left the country either for work or even for studies since the financial crisis hit. When people’s standards of living increase, they often think about improving their knowledge for a better life. In order to achieve that, they choose to study in developed countries where they believe they can get better education and develop a promising future career. However, everything has both its advantages and disadvantages, so studying abroad should not be a quick decision .

In my opinion, studying abroad is the best way to improve our skills as there are obvious advantages.Firstly, we are given the chance to improve our language skills. I think, nothing is better than learning a foreign language by face to face interaction with native speakers so as to improve our listening and speaking skills. It is also an ideal way  to discover new cultures, different  ways of thinking, history, customs and lifestyles.

Furthermore, we have more opportunities to study the new technologies and the most recent science achievements. In addition, we are equipped with the valuable and updated knowledge which may help us find jobs easily after graduating.
However, studying abroad is often expensive. We have to pay not only for our school fees but also for our living cost. Therefore, whether someone can afford it or not may become the biggest problem. Consequently, the economic issue may have a negative impact on our studies progress.
Last but not least, adapting to a new environment is a real challenge for every foreign student. While changing the weather can affect our health, different cultures and customs may also influence our mind and make us become less confident or even a victim of discrimination. Every day may turn into a struggle for survival in a strange country. If we don’t have enough determination, we will fail to adjust ourselves in the new environment. As a result, we could neither study or gain beautiful experiences as we have expected.
In conclusion, while studying abroad offers great opportunities for a better future, there are also  challenges to be considered and that we must try our best to overcome so as to make our dream come true. Therefore, nothing should stop us from following our dream and experiencing different educational opportunities since we really want it.
