1.Archeological sites in Drama

The value of archaeological sites has recently been a matter of debate among the people. I am of the opinion that history is very important for a country. With historical sites we can understand better the culture of a country. This means that historical sites can play an essential part in our lives and remind us about our glorious past!

Ancient sanctuary of Dionysus

The region of Drama is rich in ancient findings. From the Prehistoric until the Byzantine time it played a significant role in configuration of cultural and historic elements of this region. The sanctuary is situated in a location called “small tumba” situated two kilometers away from the village called “Kali Vrisi”. It overlooks in the valley of the river Agitis in a close distance from the cave of the same river. It is said that the building is a unique sample of architecture of the ancient time (end of the 4th century or the beginning of the 3rd century B.C.). What is found from the building is a thick layer of destruction caused by a fire. The pottery fragments and the coins with pieces of bricks and burnt wood found in the building bear witness to the violent passage of fire that caused that great destruction. A marble bust of Dionysus dated in Roman years was also found in the same area.

The Acropolis of Platania

The Acropolis of Platania offers traces of life from the Iron Age (1050-800 BC) to the Paleo – Christian years. There were military units to guard the river promenades. In the valley between the mountain Falakro and the mountains which surround the village Lekani (two kilometers from the present village) is located the Kales (a small castle) of Platanias. Inside the castle various objects (pottery, coins) of early Christian period were found.

Macedonian tomb

On the way to Troy a Macedonian tomb of the Hellenistic period with two chambers and a built road has also survived.

2. The Archeological sites of Drama

Nowadays many people visit museums when they travel to new places. There are many museums such as science museums, natural history museums and so on. In the area of Drama, we have some really good museums which provide culture and authenticity. The primary role of museums  is no doubt to educate and inform the community about the history of the area. That’s why when I had an educational trip to the archeological museum of Drama I was astonished by the numerous statues and the big variety of inscriptions from the ancient time informing visitors about the Gods of Olympus and especially the God Dionysus.

In Drama visitors can also admire churches from the Byzantine era in the church museum.
